NetModule Router Software Security Notice
No Private Keys stored on the NetModule Routers
The NetModule Router Software does not contain any hardcoded keys or certificates. The user must explicitly create the keys and certificates required for securing services (e.g. HTTP and SSH servers) or for implementing authentication and encryption (e.g. for VPN tunnels and WLAN clients) when configuring the NetModule Router. If even stronger cryptography is mandatory, NetModule suggests creating the keys on an external RNG (random number generator) device or managing all certificates completely on a remote certification server.
No Default Passwords or Credentials
The NetModule Router Software does not apply any default password or default credentials. The user must explicitly set the password of the administrator at the first start-up of the NetModule Router and thereby automatically sets the root password to the same password. The WebManager then allows creating further users with respective credentials.
USB Autorun
The USB Autorun feature is neither prone to brute-force attacks nor to attacks based on password dictionaries. It is started with a delay of at least 3 seconds after plugging in the USB stick. It cannot be run in parallel. Furthermore, physical access to the NetModule Router is required.

Security Updates
Flaw in RFC 5961 and SWEET32
Researchers have discovered a flaw in the Linux kernel’s TCP/IP networking subsystem implementation of the RFC 5961 challenge ACK rate limiting, that could allow an off-path attacker to inject payload into unsecured TCP connections.
In NetModule Router Software Version 4.0.0.101, the kernel has been patched to make TCP challenge ACKs less predictable (see CVE-2016-5696).
SWEET32, a new attack on TLS and VPN connections affects older block cipher algorithms, such as Triple-DES or Blowfish, which are used to encrypt data between clients and servers.
NetModule recommends to switch to AES or other stronger block ciphers.

Radio Equipment Directive (RE-D)
The European Commission points out that there will be still no restrictions on the purchase of electrical appliances as from summer 2017.
Several media had reported that due to the lack of standardization certain devices can no longer be sold on the EU market as of 13 June 2017. In fact, all products that are already on the market can still be sold. For new products for which the standardization organization of the telecommunications industry has not yet provided harmonized standards, manufacturers can fall back upon other safety tests to obtain the CE safety label.
In 2014, the EU adopted higher safety standards for radios, televisions, mobile telephones, satellite receivers or devices with WiFi and Bluetooth. As a result, manufacturers will be obliged to comply with new technical industrial standards, which are developed by the European Institute for Telecommunication Standards (ETSI). The ETSI is responsible for standardization in the field of telecommunications and cooperates closely with industry representatives. The EU Member States and the European Parliament had adopted the new directive in 2014. It has been in force since 13 June 2016 in all Member States with a transitional period until 12 June 2017. Therefore, ETSI already had time since 2014 to elaborate the new standards.
However, the ETSI has so far only worked out a part of the standards that apply to the new safety standards. These have already been published by the Commission in the Official Journal of the European Union. They are already binding for all manufacturers. For the missing standards: The Commission may, if the ETSI does not submit the standards within the time limit, continue to apply the old provisions, if they comply with the requirements of the new directive. In addition, manufacturers have the possibility to certify the safety and conformity of their devices by other ways and means.
By the way, consumers recognize standardized and certified devices by the label CE.

NetModule Wins Hamburger Hochbahn AG Contract
LTE Advanced Routers for the Entire Bus Fleet
NetModule has won a contract of Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HOCHBAHN) to supply the passenger WiFi equipment for the entire fleet (ca 1000 buses) and received the corresponding order of around 1000 vehicle routers (NB2800 Series). The entire bus fleet is to be equipped with WiFi routers by middle of 2018.
This project integrates leading-edge technology in the field of passenger WiFi and bus routers setting a new benchmark: Based on LTE Advanced with download rates of up to 300 Mbps (older LTE standards support 100 Mbps) it is therefore well prepared for the future.
The NB2800 Vehicle Routers are equipped with two LTE Advanced modules and therefore able to provide an Internet connection with a theoretical maximum download rate of 600 Mbps (equivalent to DSL 600’000 or almost Gigabit Ethernet with 1’000 Mbps). In order to guarantee this performance via the LTE network of Telekom to the local WiFi-provider Wilhelm.tel GmbH, a software was implemented in cooperation with Travelping GmbH(*). Passengers thus can enjoy the currently fastest free WiFi throughout Germany. It’s based on the mobile radio network of T-Mobile.
Starting in April 2016, a test operation including 100 routers was supported by NetModule and its devices. Thanks to its functional and robust design, the e1-certified NB2800 MediaVehicle router is excellently suited for use in buses and other road vehicles.
With dual LTE and up to 867 Gbit/s fast WiFi IEEE 802.11ac on 2.4 and 5 GHz, the router combines latest technology and lays the foundation for fastest Internet access for passengers. With its built-in storage with up to 1 TByte, the device offers media server functionalities such as storing and providing documents, images, audio and video files regardless of the internet connectivity.
(*) Travelping GmbH is one of the technology leaders in the market for implementation and operation of telecommunication networks, especially in the field of public WiFi networks and M2M core networks.

NetModule Routers running in Access Point mode are not affected
On October 16, 2017 CERT/CC/ICASI released a public announcement about discovered vulnerabilities in WPA2 handshake protocols that affect most WiFi users and all vendors worldwide. It is important to note that the weaknesses are in the WiFi standard itself, and not in individual products or implementations. An attacker within range of victim can perform a man-in-the-middle attack to encrypted WiFi connections.
This is an attack to WiFi clients only and the bug-fix applies only to devices configured as client respectively. NetModule Routers running in Access Point mode an encrypted WiFi, e.g. as a Public WLAN, are not affected.
Please find here the software updates with the following release versions:
This bugfix applies only to devices configured as client respectively. If you run an encrypted WiFi in Access Point mode all clients have to be patched to be invulnerable to this attack (CVE-2017-13077, CVE-2017-13078, CVE-2017-13079, CVE-2017-13080, CVE-2017-13081, CVE-2017-13082, CVE-2017-13084, CVE-2017-13086, CVE-2017-13087, CVE-2017-13088).

This is where NetModule comes in with its Connectivity Suite: this web-based and modular management platform allows administrators to securely integrate, configure and manage their routers. This makes it easy to create secure and simple networks and to quickly identify and solve problems. The Connectivity Suite is powerful enough for projects with hundreds of routers and can therefore grow with the application.
As the central component, the dashboard offers an overview over the platform:
- The health component continuously supervises the connection status of devices and networks.
- Device list shows every device with its characteristics (type, firmware version, online status, etc.) and which subnetwork they belong to.
- Configuration allows the preparation and management of device settings.
- Deployment enables the distribution of configuration updates and the management of scheduled updates.
The platform includes a state-of-the-art REST API, which allows the integration of the Connectivity Suite into existing tools and the functionality can be extended or customized with additional components.
The VPN connections between platform and the devices are established automatically, using proven technologies such as OpenVPN. The Connectivity Suite is installed by the customer as an application on a cloud server (E.g. Amazon) or in-house (on-premises) to ensure the confidentiality, authenticity and integrity of the data and information flows.

Information about Meltdown & Spectre
You may have heard about the two CPU microarchitecture vulnerabilities that were discovered by Google’s Project Zero team and independently by other researchers: Meltdown and Spectre, which affect most modern computing devices.
Both attacks involve speculative execution side-channels. The Meltdown vulnerability, CVE-2017-5754, can potentially allow hackers to bypass the hardware barrier between applications and kernel or host memory. The Spectre vulnerability has two variants: CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715. These vulnerabilities break isolation between separate applications. Either of these vulnerabilities could potentially be exploited to steal sensitive data from your devices.
Is my NetModule router affected?
For the newer generation of NetModule routers (NB800, NB2800, etc.), ARM based processors are used. These types are not affected by Meltdown. However, there are vulnerabilities with Spectre in some rare use cases.
For the older generation of NetModule routers (NB1600, etc.), a NXP PowerPC processor is in use. Currently, NXP is investigating if this type of CPU is affected. We will inform you as soon as there is more information available but also here we assume that in case of a potential vulnerability it will affect only a limited number of rare use cases.
How can you protect your NetModule router?
Since the application of NetModule routers is different to standard application computers or servers, the risk of an attack is minimal. This is especially the case since these vulnerabilities target that different user applications are running on one computer which is rarely the case on a NetModule router.
If you want to maximize the protection of your devices, please consider following guidelines
- Do not allow any unauthorized person access to the NetModule router
- Do not download any unauthorized software to the NetModule router
- Only run authorized SDK scripts on the NetModule router
If you take care of these measures, you can minimize the impact, which these possible vulnerabilities and others might have on your NetModule router.
We are following closely this important topic. Once there are security patches available, we will provide them to you as soon as possible.

NetModule celebrates its 20th anniversary
From no-name to industry leader
NetModule celebrates its 20th anniversary and at the same time establishes itself as the market leader for wireless routers for public transportation. Over the last five years, NetModule AG's company turnover has increased by almost 300 percent, starting at approx. 6 million in 2012. Last year almost 16 million € turnover was achieved, divided between the two markets of transportation and industry. At the same time, the team has grown from 34 (in 2012) to 55 employees.
"In the last five years we have clearly expanded our position in the public transportation market. Today we are one of the market leaders for vehicle routers, while we still see good potential for our wireless routers in the industry," says Jürgen Kern, CEO of the NetModule Group. Under his aegis, business characteristics have changed significantly: from pure service provider to product manufacturer. While the ratio between Professional Services and the product business was 90% to 10% 10 years ago, today it is more than the other way around. In its current business model, Professional Services are integrated into the product business and are primarily available for customer-specific product adaptations, e.g. for OEM products. The entry into the OEM business took place in 2017 together with the market launch of the NB800 industrial routers.
NetModule has evolved from a Swiss provider of embedded Professional Services for large customers to an internationally active company with routers for energy, IIoT, automation, road and rail traffic. Today, the NetModule Group with headquarters in Switzerland bundles NetModule GmbH in Germany, founded in 2005, the subsidiary NetModule Asia Ltd. in Hong Kong, established in 2011, and the subsidiary NetModule Australia PTY Ltd. in Sydney, Australia, founded in 2017.
While the headquarters in Switzerland mainly handles development, production control and administration, the German NetModule GmbH is the main revenue driver, initially < € 0.5 million and today around € 10 million, supported by local development and support. The Hong Kong branch provides support and monitoring of equipment manufacture by contract manufacturers in China. At the same time, Hong Kong serves as a location for sourcing in Asia and as a door opener to the Asian market in order to further advance the internationalization of the business. NetModule also maintains pathbreaking cooperations with leading large companies such as Alstom, Siemens, Philips, Bombardier, Phoenix Contact, Volkswagen, Mercedes and ZF Friedrichshafen.
"We will continue to see 'connectivity' as one of our focal points in the future. Especially the use of different transmission technologies in one device will gain in importance", says Jürgen Kern, CEO of NetModule Group. Data from sensors, for example, is transmitted using short-range radio technologies (ZigBee, BLE, etc.), which can then be recoded, pre-processed and forwarded to the Internet or cloud via mobile radio or WiFi. "Applications for eMobility and/or autonomous driving in the transportation sector also have a high demand for connectivity to the Internet and thus for corresponding communication devices - exactly NetModule's area of expertise.”
As a visionary from the very beginning, Jürgen Kern focused the company specifically on future technologies and markets. The modular embedded design was part of the portfolio from an early stage, in addition to services relating to complex FPGA design. In 2006, NetModule launched the Wireless Router Initiative - an important milestone in the company's development. With M2M applications in the fields of automation, industry and transportation, NetModule was a real pioneer at that time. When the Swiss already presented a preconfigured complete solution offer in 2009, they took a unique position in the market and positioned themselves as trendsetters. The first generation of wireless routers was designed for use in transportation and industry and enabled applications such as condition monitoring, remote access, e-ticketing, transmission of passenger information, and later passenger WLAN and infotainment, online video surveillance and asset tracking. Since then, the knowledge and experience gained has been continuously incorporated into ongoing developments.

NetModule and Hamburger Hochbahn - Powerful PWLAN
State-of-the-art NB2800 Vehicle Router as "the all-rounder in the vehicle"
Hamburger Hochbahn AG has completed the installation of its entire bus fleet (approx. 1000 buses) with state-of-the-art NB2800 series vehicle routers of NetModule. More than 100 passengers per vehicle can now surf the MobyKlick network free of charge and even at the same time – it’s currently Germany's fastest mobile and free WiFi with a download speed of 1 Mbit/s and an upload speed of 300 KBit/s. Your daily data volume at HOCHBAHN is 100MB. The maximum download speed of the router per vehicle is up to 600 Mbit/s, depending on network availability.
Because the feedback from passengers is so positive, HOCHBAHN is now planning free WiFi access for each of the 92 underground stations by the end of this year.
"The cooperation with NetModule and the performance of the routers have completely convinced us," says Erich Reschke, head of train protection and communication systems department. "As a next step, we also want to use the devices for transmitting further information". The technical prerequisites provided by the router make it possible to add useful functions such as the transmission of operating data (DFI, connection information) or the provision of current information to passenger television.
The NB2800 routers offer two integrated LTE Advanced Cat. 6 modems, one of which is used exclusively for PWLAN and the other for operational data transmission such as passenger counting. Secure transmission takes place via VLANs and dedicated communication paths for each application. Quality of Service (QoS) enables the prioritization of data traffic and ensures that less important tasks do not block those with higher priority. Many other interfaces ensure excellent interaction with the on-board electronics. If required, the routers can also be equipped with CAN, RS-232, RS-485, Audio Line In/Out, and IBIS interfaces.

Passenger WiFi in Polish Intercity Trains
NB3800 Railway Routers Enable Passenger WiFi and Entertainment
Passengers travelling in Polish intercity trains (PKP Intercity) from East to West and from North to South (i.e. Warsaw, Gdańsk, Berlin) now can enjoy passenger WiFi. It is free of charge for the passengers, they simply need to register. To realize this, the manufacturer of trains FPS Cegielski (H. Cegielski – Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych Sp. z.o.o.) has integrated a total of 60 pieces of NB3800 railway routers from March 2018 until March 2019, with an option of additional 30 devices until September 2019. These NB3800 wireless railway routers realize fast internet connection with Quad LTE. The system integrator Ledatel, a leading Polish company in the rail telecommunications systems business, has played a decisive role during the integration uf the routers. Ledatel has chosen NetModule routers due to their ability to integrate 4 modems working in parallel as well as a GPS server. Additionally, the EN50155 and EN45545 certification and the possibility of a central management as well as remote maintenance and monitoring via data center has been beneficial.
To enable passenger WiFi in the train, each wagon has been equipped with an own router. The quad SIM feature and the sophisticated WAN link manager are providing load balancing between multiple network providers to achieve maximum connection availability. The extraordinary performance of the NB3800 railway routers which enable applications needing high data throughput is another special feature of the systems.
In addition to passenger WiFi and entertainment the NB3800 railway routers can also be used for applications like condition monitoring. Latest VPN technologies like OpenVPN or IPSec ensure secure data transmission. The router can also serve as a GSM-VoIP gateway, i.e. for communication of the conductor to the control center, emergency calls or site-independent calls of conductors to the center and vice versa for direct announcements into the train.
Thanks to the integrated GPS module and the transmittal of railway data, the center can locate the train with pinpoint accuracy, analyze operational data and react immediately if needed.

GPS Rollover Problem
Software Patch Available
The Week Rollover Problem is a known issue caused by the way that GPS used to handle the week element of the data that forms an essential part of the navigation signal. GPS used a 10-bit field to encode the week number in each GPS time message, which means that a maximum of 1,024 weeks (19.7 years), could be handled. Each of these periods is known in GPS terms as an “epoch”. At the end of each epoch of 1,024 weeks, the receiver resets the week number to zero and starts counting again.
The first GPS satellites went live on 6th January 1980, meaning that the first epoch of GPS time lasted until 21st August 1999. We are now nearing the end of the second epoch, which will fall on the 6th April 2019.
Analysis for NetModule Routers showed, that time and location information provided by our GNSS enabled Routers are not affected by the Rollover effect 6th April 2019.
However, some GNSS chipsets show an invalid time from November 2019. NetModule has implemented a bug fix and corrected the time information in the NMEA data. Release History: http://wiki.netmodule.com/documentation/releases

NetModule equips Abellio vehicles with passenger WiFi
NB3800 MediaRail Router as basis for many applications
A ground-breaking project for the rail operator Abellio began in December 2018, in the run-up to the commissioning of the diesel network Saxony-Anhalt (DISA). The trains used were to be equipped with WiFi for passengers for the next 14 years. For the first time in Germany, an operator is taking responsibility for this form of communication solution instead of the vehicle manufacturer. Such a task requires strong partners.
NetModule therefore played a major role in this project. The manufacturer of innovative communication technology built its own rail-certified wireless routers into the 54 brand-new ALSTOM Coradia Lint trains ex works as the heart of the communication solution. The used NB3800 MediaRail routers offer wireless Internet access via LTE and extensive media server functionality. The up to 1TB large integrated memory and fastest WiFi enable data-intensive applications such as passenger WiFi and entertainment on the move. Thanks to the latest wireless technologies and the bundling of four different mobile networks, the best possible availability of the Internet and a high bandwidth are guaranteed.
"In addition to NetModule's many years of expertise, it was above all the products tailored to our needs that were decisive. The offer was also financially attractive for us. We attach great importance to the fact that the routers are easy to install and can be integrated into WiFi solutions," says Andreas Schymura, responsible project manager at Abellio. "With the NetModule railway router, we have the ideal solution in the vehicle - it couldn't be easier or more cost-effective."
Abellio sees an additional benefit in the fact that the NetModule routers can easily be combined with WiFi solutions from the mass business (e.g. hotel/restaurant, tourism). This makes it possible, for example, to insert regionally limited advertisements of places of interest or advertising companies along the railway line. This can be used to partially offset the running costs of the system. A win-win situation for everyone involved.

NetModule wins Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019
NG800 Automotive IoT platform convinces jury
The new connectivity platform NG800 from NetModule not only enables stable digital communication via various wireless technologies to the Internet and flexible use, but it is also exceptionally beautiful. The jury of the renowned Red Dot Awards awarded the IoT Gateway the coveted Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019 for design and construction.
The Red Dot jury was impressed by the excellent design quality of the NG800 Automotive IoT platform from NetModule, which connects a vehicle to a wireless network. It enables the necessary stable communication between on-board vehicle equipment and cloud applications. It differs both technically and visually from the previously known devices of its kind in that it meets ecological and aesthetic requirements: The eye-catching ribs of the multifunctional IoT gateway are the most important design element. With these reinforcements, the necessary contact pressure of the seal between the housing cover and base can be created using only six screws. Depending on the type of seal, this allows device protection classes between IP54 and IP65 to be achieved. The clear edges of the compact IoT gateway support the statement that it meets both high-tech requirements and use in harsh environments. With the innovative and modular housing concept of the NG800, NetModule creates the basis for a high degree of flexibility that enables a wide variety of product variants, even in small production runs.
Jürgen Kern, CEO of NetModule AG: "The Red Dot Award is a remarkable success for NetModule. We see this as confirmation of our innovative strength and our future-oriented product strategy".
On 8 July 2019, the winners received their certificate at the Red Dot Gala in Essen, and the NG800 Automotive IoT Platform will be on display at the "Design on Stage" exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, which will present all the award-winning products. In addition, the NG800 has been included in the Red Dot Design Yearbook, online and in the Red Dot Design App since that day.
With over 18,000 submissions, the Red Dot Award is one of the largest design competitions in the world. The internationally established seal of quality is awarded annually in 48 categories and is regarded by industry as an award for good and innovative product design. In 2019, designers and companies from 55 countries submitted more than 5500 products to the competition. A committee of experts from various specialist fields examines these products in detail according to criteria such as formal quality, degree of innovation, functionality, product periphery and ecological compatibility.

NetModule joins ITxPT initiative as Principal Member
Vehicle Router NB2800 receives ITxPT marking
NetModule's NB2800 Vehicle Routers are fully compliant with the standards specified by ITxPT, as confirmed by the ITxPT initiative. The devices were tested in a precisely defined test sequence and can now be provided with the ITxPT label. For transport operators, the ITxPT label means security and interoperability for their infrastructures. The NB2800 routers are E1 compliant vehicle routers for wireless data and voice communication in mobile environments, especially in public transport. With their modular hardware design and feature-rich software, they form the technical basis for applications such as passenger WLAN and passenger information systems, driver communication, remote maintenance, condition monitoring, operational data transmission or video surveillance. NetModule now refers to more than 15,000 products delivered each year and many international projects in public transport.
"As a leading manufacturer of communication products for passenger transport, the standardization of information technologies is very important to us. We are therefore all the more pleased that our NB2800 vehicle router conforms to ITxPT requirements. This is a door opener for new European and international projects. Further products from our portfolio will follow," says Jürgen Kern, Managing Director of NetModule AG.
Recently, the Swiss communications specialist NetModule joined the ITxPT initiative as a Principal Member in order to help shape a uniform standard for IT systems (e.g. on-board computers and passenger displays) in public transport vehicles. Principal members can actively participate in the working groups and enjoy free access to technical support, to all events and to the documentation centre of the ITxPT initiative as well as free use of the ITxPT compliance laboratory.
